Hello, friends! Winston here. Dogs are usually seen as sweet, lovable creatures, but did you know that we love our humans just as much as our humans love us? It’s true—science says so! Here’s what we know now about why my fellow four-legged friends are just so darn loyal to you humans:
We think of you as family and even react to your voice
Recently, the good dogs at Barkpost got their paws on a study by GE that says dogs “rely on humans more than they do their own kind for affection, protection and everything in between.” In short, we dogs think of you humans as our family. Apparently my dog brain processes the scent of my favorite humans as a reward, which is what makes my tail go in circles and my paws do that famous happy-dog dance. This study also found that we dogs know, love and respond to your voice. We know when you’re happy with us and when you’re not so happy with our trash can art on the kitchen floor.
We know what you’re feeling
Dog brains are far more advanced than our tail-chasing would indicate. We use your facial cues, vocal cues and even your eye contact to determine your mood. According to Mental Floss, dogs can store emotional memories associated with human facial expressions and vocal tones to determine what kind of feelings their favorite person is having at the moment. We can build quite the inventory of memories over time, which is why our loyalty tends to strengthen after many years together—and why we give the best hugs when you’re having a bad day.
We care about your feelings
I’ve been trying to spell this out with my kibble for years! A recent study on dog behavior has finally found out just how loyal we really are. According to Kyoto University in Japan, dogs’ loyalty runs so deep that we will actually snub strangers who are mean to or reject our beloved person. My furry friends and I will even refuse food by someone who has been rude to our favorite biped, which tells you all you need to know, because I have strong feelings for snacks!
I think I’ll sign off for now and spend some quality couch time with my favorite people. I hope you’ve learned something new and fun about your very best friend!
