Each year, New Jersey-based color authority Pantone announces their Color of the Year; this selection is based on months of research of current trends in technology, pop culture, music, travel trends, worldwide events, and even art collections. After information from around the world is collected and the trends are analyzed, Pantone chooses a color that will go on to influence such industries as home design, fashion merchandising, and even product packaging. Owned by color science company X-Rite, Pantone has pioneered color direction and solutions, studying the way color influences thought processes as well as offering a full array of color inspiration for projects of all sizes.
Pantone recently announced Radiant Orchid as 2014’s Color of the Year, a “captivating, magical, enigmatic purple.” Speaking to the imagination as well as one’s confidence and joy, this beautiful color has almost limitless potential when it comes to enhancing your home and making small changes that carry huge impact.
Incorporation of color into your home can go far beyond changing the color of a wall. Painting walls is certainly effective at bringing about a color change, but it’s not always necessary to pull out a drop cloth and a paint bucket when you want to change the look and feel of a room or even several rooms. Here are 5 easy ways to incorporate Pantone’s Radiant Orchid into your home in 2014!
1. Paint a small piece of unfinished furniture
Unfinished furniture is a great way to incorporate a new color into any room because it is easy to paint and typically rather affordable. Painting something like a small end table or foot stool is a quick way to bring the beauty of Radiant Orchid inside without having to move the couch and tape off the windows.
2. Paint a picture frame
Using a small amount of Radiant Orchid to take a picture frame from the classic tan of woodgrain to a inviting and creative purple is a fast and fun way to bring the Color of the Year into your home. Using several frames of different shapes and sizes to create a cluster of Radiant Orchid frames on a dark wall is the perfect way to bring some depth and imagination to your home this year.
3. Paint your front door
Go bold, right? Tell everyone in the neighborhood just how bold you really are by putting this gorgeous shade of purple right in front of your house. A nice afternoon is all it takes to do a little sanding, priming, and painting and a Radiant Orchid front door could very well be the bold change you need to make your house the most beautiful one on the block.
4. Paint a few flower pots
Not quite ready to commit to a purple front door? No problem! Use a little Radiant Orchid to paint a couple of flower pots of different sizes and place them around your front door or in your entryway. This beautifully bold, unique shade is sure to complement any color greenery or flowering plant and will take that terra cotta from plain to perfect.
5. Make a Radiant Orchid wreath
If you’re not quite keen on painting furniture and don’t have a plan for flower pots yet, you can use Radiant Orchid to make a basic wreath pop. Using a small amount of paint or even a sample jar, paint a few wooden numbers that reflect your address and hot glue them to a wreath to hang on your front door. The majestic purple will pop on any color wreath, especially something neutral like burlap or wheat, and bring all the beauty of the Color of the Year to your home without any of the labor. Make it yours by adding a few faux flowers and your mail carrier will probably never mistake your door for your neighbor’s again!
