Summertime activities mean something a little different in Texas than they do elsewhere. Because the heat outside can sometimes reach dangerous heights, Texans often tough out a good portion of the summer indoors.
We’re here to help with some fun indoor summer activities to play the sweltering days away! Here are five of our favorites at SampleHouse:
1. Indoor Camping
Let’s be honest—our great state always seems to miss the memo that it’s supposed to cool down at night, so sleeping in a tent outside in summer can end up a muggy, sweaty mess. Bring the fun of camping indoors with tents, lights, snacks and even movies. Bonus: no bugs!
2. Minute to Win It
Gather the family and even the neighbors for this at-home version of the hit show. We have all kinds of game suggestions on our Pinterest page to pump up family game night. We love this marshmallow grab game, where each contestant grabs as many mini marshmallows with chopsticks as they can before the clock runs out. We also love the idea of candy medals for winners!
3. Drive-In Movie Night
Who doesn’t love a drive-in movie?! Whether it’s inside or outside, channel the good ol’ days by creating a drive-in movie at home. We love the little box cars for unlicensed drivers, and they’re perfect for carhop popcorn service. If you have a projector, hang a sheet on the side of your house or between two trees to create the coolest movie night ever.
4. Simple, Fun, (Almost) Free
These simple activities cost next to nothing and can keep little ones entertained for hours. Balloon tennis takes nothing more than a balloon, two paper plates and two popsicle sticks. See how long they can keep it in the air! Pom pom shooters take just a few seconds, a plastic cup and the business end of a balloon. And the DIY race track takes some butcher paper or a roll of craft paper from an easel and some creative minds with a pack of markers. Since this activity takes place on the floor, we recommend the washable invisible kind that doesn’t transfer to anything but paper. Just a few minutes of assembly can buy you hours of indoor fun!
5. Fun Foods
There’s definitely a certain set of foods that just scream “It’s summer!” Enlist the help of the little ones and whip up these summer treats that everyone loves. The “Cup of Dirt” dessert is a simple pudding and Oreo mixture, topped off, of course, with a colorful gummy worm or two. And it wouldn’t be summer with s’mores. No need to start a fire in the living room (please don’t do that)! Just fill a cast iron skillet with extra large marshmallows and broil them for a few minutes until they get golden on top. The rest of the assembly is the same as with traditional s’mores, and there’s no campfire to stamp out.
