One of the best parts of the holidays — besides the food, of course — is the decorations. In the era of Pinterest, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with the possibilities for unique holiday decor, especially when it comes to tablescapes. Luckily, some of the most beautiful holiday tablescape ideas are also some of the easiest to pull off.
This holiday season, put a homemade spin on your festive tablescape. Just a few simple touches can create an elegant look that won’t detract from the food. Here are a few of our favorite essential tablescape elements to get you started.
Whether your name cards take the form of kraft paper gift tags and clothespins or Scrabble tiles and painted fall leaves, this is one part of your holiday tablescape that really shows your guests you care. One of our very favorite name card ideas is almost too easy. Using a wine cork or a small section of faux birch available at any craft store, carve a slit in the top just wide enough to hold a cardstock name card. You can type up your name card or practice your hand at letter art! Stop by SampleHouse to pick up a how-to book on letter art, and you may just find yourself a new hobby.
For a fun Thanksgiving placemat idea, take the ultimate DIY route and have your guests make their own! Cut out a large rectangle of heavy brown kraft paper and write “I Am Thankful For…” across the top in decorative letters. Then have your guests each write what they’re thankful for on their placemat. Be sure to include a pen with each place setting and to set aside a few minutes during your feast to go around the table and ask each person what they’re thankful for.
Napkin rings are essential for an elegant holiday table. If you don’t already have a favorite set of napkin rings, make your own! A simple twist of rustic twine will do the trick, as will some painted PVC pipe or raffia rings. Our favorite is this idea for a fresh flower napkin ring, which looks kind of like a boutonnière for each place setting. Using some steel rings (available at any hardware store), floral tape and some fresh blooms, you can create a set of real floral napkin rings that are sure to wow your guests.
You don’t have to be a floral designer to create a stunning centerpiece for your holiday table this year. In fact, you don’t even have to be particularly crafty. All you need is a little Mod Podge, some mason jars and some flat silk leaves. Coat the outside of each mason jar with a thin layer of Mod Podge and affix the silk leaves around the outside so that they overlap and cover up the whole jar. Once dry, place a flameless candle inside, and you have an instant holiday votive that will last for years and set the tone for your DIY tablescape.
